Achievements

Background

Lupe was born and raised in Jalisco, Mexico. She migrated to the United States with her parents when she was 13 years old. Lupe and her husband have a 21-year-old daughter who attended Mark Twain Elementary, Fritch Elementary, Carson Middle School and Carson High School.

As an adult, Lupe achieved her educational goals by completing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Business from WNC and a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Management from WGU.

Prior to her retirement, Lupe had the good fortune to work in higher education for 32 years.

During her employment at WNC, she was promoted to take on different roles. While she served as the Executive Assistant to the Dean of Student Services, she had the opportunity to work directly with the students. She assisted the dean with the implementation of the Athletics Program and the Jump Start Program. These programs supported high achieving students to make the most out of their educational journey. In 2010, Lupe was delegated the responsibility to create and manage a student success program to support the largest minority student population on campus. She was honored to develop the Latino Leadership Academy that supported first-generation Latinos that did not believe they were academically prepared to attend college full-time straight out of high school. Not only were the students able to recognize the skills they possessed, but they completed a college degree in a timely manner.

Testimonials

From a Parent:

Thank you very much for so many years of service and help to our youth but not only to them but also to us parents, thank you for mentoring us and guiding us in the process of enrolling our children in college.
Congratulations on your retirement! And enjoy this new stage of your life.

~ Sara Jauregui

From a Student:

During my time at Western Nevada College, Lupe was an instrumental person in making sure I achieved my goals. Whenever I had any questions or concerns, I knew I could go to her and get an answer or at the very least be pointed in the right direction. I knew Lupe was a person who would remain a positive influence on my life because she always took the time to check in and make sure my career was headed in the right direction. Today I know that I owe a lot of my success to Lupe, and my family and I will forever be grateful. I am a proud teacher for the 2nd graders at Bordewich Elementary School.

~Mariana Chavez

From a Student:

The Latino Leadership Academy helped me a lot. I was able to start college with a prescriptive academic plan that guided me to complete an Associate of Arts degree in two years. The program taught me time management skills that helped me balance my work and personal responsibilities. Additionally, the extra support from the cohort coaches helped me stay on track and ensured that I completed my work on campus. During my second year, I was also given the opportunity to work as a Cohort Coach to help the new students in the academy persevere during their first year in college. This opportunity also helped me confirm my career choice. Thanks to the LLA, I am pursuing my degree in secondary education, while I am gaining experience as an ELL teacher at Oasis Academy in Fallon, NV.

From a Student:

To say that the Jumpstart Program changed my life is an understatement. I was in the first class (2018) of students at Carson High School who were set to graduate with their associates degrees two weeks before receiving their high school diplomas. While this meant my class had to deal with many challenges, we also were given so many blessings in the program. Jumpstart provided students the opportunity to not only prepare them for collegiate courses in the realest way possible, the program also provided students with the opportunity to jumpstart their college careers and to make a degree more affordable and accessible. Personally for me, the Jumpstart Program became a way for me to prove to myself and everyone around me that my abilities are limitless with hard work, dedication, and perseverance. I was able to mature in a way I could’ve never dreamed of while staying in the environment of my public high school. I was ready to begin focusing on my professional career while growing and maturing in the best way I could at that stage in my life. The feeling of walking across the college stage two entire weeks before I would walk across my high school stage, was truly the most rewarding and surreal moment for me, and Jumpstart provided me all of that.

~Alexa Haigt, Carson High School Class of 2018
